Superintendent’s Message 6.7.2023

June 7, 2023

Dear Warwick Valley CSD Community,

We are writing to inform you of the adjustments made in response to the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 150, resulting from the ongoing wildfires in Canada. These measures have been implemented to ensure the well-being and safety of our students and staff. As a precautionary measure, all Physical Education classes and recess periods were relocated indoors, and outdoor field trips scheduled for today and tomorrow were canceled. Additionally, after-school sports practices were conducted indoors to mitigate exposure to compromised air quality.

Looking ahead to Thursday, June 8, 2023, we anticipate continuing with the same protocol, as per forecasts. Our actions will be in alignment with the guidance provided by the New York State Education and Health Departments, which serve as authoritative sources on responding to poor air-quality conditions. If there is an improvement in air quality throughout the day, any changes to outdoor activities will be promptly communicated.

We kindly request parents make alternative transportation arrangements for students who typically walk or bike to school. Furthermore, students are encouraged to utilize indoor waiting areas to minimize exposure to the outdoor air.

Please be assured that we will remain vigilant in monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI) to prioritize the safety and well-being of our school community. For updates on air quality, you can access reliable information through www.airnow.gov.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and partnership in navigating these challenges related to wildfire-induced air quality.

Sincerely,

David Leach
Superintendent of Schools
