Superintendent Update #15 – May 1, 2020

May 1, 2020

Dear Members of the Warwick Valley CSD Community,

Today, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the State’s schools and colleges will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year and will continue distance learning to curb the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak.

This year has brought many unforeseen challenges and disappointments to our students and their families.  The Class of 2020 continues to learn of the cancellation of many milestones and rites of passage that typically take place during a regular school year.  While we all agree that keeping students safe is our primary concern, their accomplishments and achievements will not go overlooked.

We’ve all heard the proverbial phrase, when life gives you lemons make lemonade! Well, it is indeed time for us to make some lemonade. We will maintain an optimistic attitude, and remind our students just how special they are to all of us!

We are in the process of planning culminating activities for the “exit” grades, with particular attention given to the Class of 2020.  We’ve got some work to do; yet, we are making progress. For instance, to celebrate the accomplishments of our senior class, anticipate a “virtual” graduation ceremony held at the Warwick Drive-In.  Also, we will display senior portraits on banners throughout our community, and graduation yard signs should be arriving soon. We are working with local businesses to plan the decoration of storefronts two weeks before graduation to honor the Class of 2020. You’ll see social media postings, pre-recorded Awards nights, online yearbook signings, and much more.  These plans would not be possible without the support of many community volunteers and devoted staff members. Please anticipate a specific acknowledgment of their generosity in the future.

Finally, a big thanks to our first responders! Check out our latest video from our middle school.

Thank you for your continued collaboration as we strive to support the school community for your children. My best to you and your family!

Warm regards,

David Leach
