WVMS Wire Choir Orchestra tooks the stage beyond school walls this summer

on August 8, 2014

Wire Choir delighted community audiences at concerts over the summer for the “Railroad Green” concert series” & the “On the Lawn at Sugarloaf Crossing” concert series.

Wire Choir is an unconventional orchestra comprised of students grades 5-12 from the Warwick Valley Central School District. Wire Choir was created in the fall of 2005 by WVMS orchestra director Elissa Maynard, who also performs as singer-songwriter E’lissa Jones. Wire Choir performs pop songs (arranged by Mrs. Maynard) ranging from Nirvana to John Legend, as well as many of her original compositions.

“When Wire Choir first began, it consisted of just 20 sixth-grade students,” explains Mrs. Maynard. “By the next year, students who had participated in sixth-grade Wire Choir wanted to continue playing in the group and sacrificed their free time do so. Since that time, the group has grown to more than 70 active participants.”

In 2013-14, the students had the opportunity to perform concerts outside of the school walls. At an Empty Bowls performance, Mrs. Maynard mentioned going on tour with the group and the students were elated. To start their touring endeavor, the Wire Choir performed at Warwick’s Railroad Green, July 9 with the E’lissa Jones Band. The group opened the concert with their own selections followed by a few more accompanying the E’lissa Jones Band.

The second date on the Wire Choir’s summer tour schedule was August 21 for the On the Lawn at Sugarloaf Crossing concert series. While the group is beginning with small steps by performing locally first, the ultimate goal is to “Take Manhattan.”

“Wire Choir is a great group made up of talented young musicians. I believe in them and I know they can and will do anything they set their minds to. So mark your calendars people!” says Mrs. Maynard.
