WVMS students give scientific process project a green thumbs up

October 19, 2021

Middle school students in Ms. Waters’ class gave a unanimous “green thumbs up” to a recent project they completed while studying about the scientific method.

“The problem we addressed in our investigation was, ‘will the type of grass seed — type A or type B — affect the rate of germination,’” explained Ms. Waters.

On Day 1, students added soil and grass seeds to stockings. The result was something resembling a cross between a baseball and a tea bag. Those were packed into small pots and left for the germination process to begin. The students then observed the rate of germination and growth of the grass.

At the two-week mark, students noted that the grass had grown to lengths of 15 to 20 cm. Their data showed that seed type B had, in fact, germinated more quickly than type A.

After their research, the students had time to give their specimens a little bit of personality, including some really great “haircuts!”
