WVMS student poet recognized in writing contest

on January 14, 2015

A poem written by WVMS 5th grader Liliana Rivera has been recognized in a regional writing contest. Her poem, “A Fun Day at Bear Mountain,” was judged a runner-up in the fourth and fifth grade category in Teaching the Hudson Valley’s “Writing About Place” contest.

Students were asked to write a descriptive piece about their favorite place in the Hudson Valley, and Liliana chose Bear Mountain State Park. Teaching the Hudson Valley is a program of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area & Greenway Conservancy.

Notes Liliana’s reading/writing teacher, Ms. Danielle Diglio, “Liliana works incredibly hard at becoming a better reader and writer. I’m so thrilled that she will get to experience this success and realize her hard work is paying off!”

A Fun Day at Bear Mountain

By Liliana Rivera, Warwick Valley Middle School, Grade 5

I see sparkly blue water
and the white swans swimming
I see the animals in the zoo

I hear families laughing
and the growl of the bears
I hear chirping birds
and frogs croaking in the lake

I touch the water in the lake
I feel the wind and the joy in the air

I smell the flowers dancing
and the tasty food cooking on the grill

I taste the sweet deliciousness
of watermelon and grapes from our picnic
and the happiness of spending a day with my family and friends
