WVMS art students provide input for the Village of Warwick Comprehensive Plan

May 17, 2021

Warwick Valley Middle School students in Nicole Sisco’s art classes created drawings that will hopefully help the Village of Warwick update its Comprehensive Plan.

Ms. Sisco assigned all of her students to produce artwork showing what they think are the best parts of the village now or what the village should look like in 20 years. She took the best of the drawings and made a movie that was posted on the village website and viewed by the Comprehensive Plan Committee.

“As the Village of Warwick refreshes its Comprehensive Plan, gathering community input is critical for capturing what makes Warwick so special,” said Mayor Michael J. Newhard. “Thank you to WVCSD’s Ms. Nicole Sisco and her middle school students for expressing their ideas through art. This project is a wonderful interface with our youth, introduces them to community planning and helps them recognize that they have a voice in shaping the place they live.”

Some of the favorite parts of Warwick mentioned by the students were the parks and various restaurants. Fizzy Lifting Soda Pop Candy Shop was the subject of quite a few drawings. Students also suggested that the village should consider adding a movie theater, community garden and a toy store.

“These students are quite literally the future of Warwick, and their feedback should be heard,” said committee member Tom McKnight, who is also Ms. Sisco’s husband.

The comprehensive plan was last updated in 2004. The purpose of the plan is to provide a foundation for all future zoning and land use decisions in the village. The Comprehensive Plan Committee is actively seeking input from the community about current village assets and challenges to be addressed in the future. Residents can share their ideas with the committee directly by completing a brief survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WarwickSurvey

The Comprehensive Plan Committee’s next virtual meeting is at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 24. The meeting can be viewed on the village’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK7D7KGbZF6nYfbcWGH6-VA
