WVMS 5th & 6th Grade Winter Concert continues holiday concert season
In two separate performances in the High School auditorium on Monday, fifth and sixth grade ensembles wowed audiences during the WVMS Grades 5 & 6 Winter Concert!

Warwick Valley Middle School 5th/6th Grade Winter Concert on Dec. 20, 2022.
The evening opened at 6:30 with the Fifth Grade ensembles. The Chorus came first, under the direction of Shane Peters, with their rendition of “One More Song” by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It featured solos by Max Paltrowitz, Elle Srednicki, and Angelina McKnight. For their second tune, “The Fox,” Thomas Vega complemented the chorus’ singing with cajón playing. Parents were delighted to hear the 80’s pop classic “Walking on Sunshine” as the final number. Made famous by Katrina and the Waves, this take on the song featured the solo group of Sage Brookins, Dakarai Powell, Emma Stazzone, and Layla Wright.
Next, director Ashley Head and the Fifth Grade Band took the stage, opening with a song called “Latin Magic.” Their set continued with the patriotic-themed “Heroes and Glory.” Showing their growing mastery of different styles, the ensemble closed out their set with “Hard Rock Blues” by John Higgins.
The Fifth Grade Orchestra, directed by Tama Moser, got right to the classical hits with “Theme from New World Symphony,” a Michael Allen arrangement of the great Antonin Dvorak composition. The group’s second song was the “First Scale March.”

The 7:00 o’clock program featured the Sixth Grade ensembles, beginnging with Mr. Peters and the Chorus. In another nod to the 80’s, they opened with “The Never Ending Story,” before featuring soloists Caroline Castellano, Gianna Ricco, and Giuliana Martin in “Let It Grow.” Their final song, “Aiken Drum,” featured the Chamber Ensemble: Ashlyn Brown, Samantha Corcoran, Madison Lijoi, Olivia Peconie, and Ms. Christy Brown.
Ms. Head and the Sixth Grade Band erupted onto the stage with the song “Magma.” Then, they dialed up the holiday magic with their rendition of Vince Guaraldi’s playful “Linus and Lucy.” They closed their set with P. Lavender’s “Majestic March.”

On what was the second night of Hanukah, Ms. Moser and the Sixth Grade Orchestra opened it’s portion of the evening with “Shalom Chaverim, Rock Version,” a unique take on a traditional Hebrew folk song. Their next two tunes shared a common thread, scales! First was “The Blue Iguana,” followed by the “Theme from Jurassic Park,” by John Williams and featuring the The Lunch Bunch Chamber Orchestra and Lucas Cresser on drum set.
Ms. Head, Ms. Moser, and Ms. Peters would like to thank Principal Diopoulis, Mr. Yapkowitz, and Mr. Radon for their support of the middle school students and the music program. Thank you to Superintendent Leach, Ms. McGourty, and the Board of Education for their continued support. A very special shout out to the amazing middle school custodial staff, who keeps our teaching spaces ticking! Finally, gratitude to Warwick parents for their support of music in our schools!
