On Dec. 3 and 4, WVHS junior Chloe Borthwick took part in the annual Winter Conference of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester.

Chloe was accepted into the very small and elite Vocal Jazz Choir. She was one of only six altos in the state to make it into the vocal group.

To audition for the program, Chloe had to prepare a standard jazz solo, perform sight-reading on the blues scale and demonstrate her skill at vocal improvisation. Her selection to this program is quite impressive, especially since the high school music program does not include a vocal jazz ensemble!

Additionally, during the concert in Rochester, Chloe was chosen to perform a scat solo in the piece called Summertime.

The group of 32 students includes brass musicians, pianists, guitarists, drummers and vocalists. Chloe is one of just eight selected to the Jazz choir.

Under the direction of renowned educators from prestigious music schools, the students will record an album at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, perform at a number of GRAMMY Week events and attend the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 12 as guests of The Recording Academy. Finally, the student musicians will perform at the GRAMMY Celebration after-party.

GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session selectees are eligible for more than $2 million in college scholarships made possible through the GRAMMY Foundation’s college partners: Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and USC Thornton School of Music. In addition, because of Chloe’s participation, Warwick Valley High School will receive a professional cymbal, courtesy of the Zildjian Company.
