WVHS Science Research students listen to local physician, Dr. JoanowOver one hundred Science Research and Biomedical students attended a lecture in the high school media center presented by a prominent local physician, Dr. Alex Joanow. Dr. Joanow is an Obstetrician & Gynecologist in Goshen and a founding partner of the Horizon Family Medical Group. He is currently serving as an Adjunct professor at the new Middletown campus of Touro Medical College teaching courses in gross anatomy and physical diagnosis.

Dr. Joanow provided useful information on the educational requirements and commitments of becoming a physician, a physician’s assistant, and a nurse practitioner. Students found it particularly interesting that there is a lack of physicians, as well as mid-level positions in all fields of medicine.

Dr. Joanow’s presentation was insightful and helpful for those who are on the fence as to whether or not pursue a medical career. Science Research junior, Alexa Yuen, commented that “Having an experienced speaker is such an honor and is inspiring to all the students who are genuinely interested in a career in medical science.” Students hope that there will be more opportunities for speakers such as Dr. Joanow in the future and possibly even a visit to Touro Medical College.
