For returning high schoolers, the options include courses in the areas of math, science, ELA, history, engineering, and the arts. Current eighth graders who will be high school freshmen next September, visited the Electives Fair to learn about freshmen electives in engineering, agriculture, science, the arts, and computer science, and also got the chance to talk freshmen basics with students and teachers.

Warwick Valley believes strongly in the benefits of student choice, and offers a wide variety of electives that complement core academic classes while allowing students to explore their interests.

“The electives fairs are important days for our students,” said WVHS Principal Marguerite Fusco. “They help our students make informed decisions about their course selections, and really shape their education in personal ways.”

Electives are an ideal way for young people to explore their academic and personal interests more deeply, and certainly to uncover new ones. Oftentimes, electives lead students to interests that evolve into career paths and majors in college. Choosing electives in high school can also demonstrates a bent toward, and help create a foundation for, lifelong learning.

The WVHS Media Center was buzzing with students for the two days, who moved from station to station getting information from peers and teachers. They also got to join in on some hands-on experiences, robotics demos, and other quick activities.
