The purpose of the Taconic IPA Science Education Grants Program is to expand students’ learning opportunities in the sciences through the acquisition of classroom and laboratory science equipment. The grant will fund the purchase of a digital microscope and laboratory glassware, such as beakers and test tubes, to be used in all seventh- and eighth-grade science classes at Warwick Middle School.

“The Warwick Valley Central School District continues to focus on expanding its basic curriculum to include all STEAM areas (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). This grant will allow for the replacement and upgrading of critical laboratory supplies and help implement hands-on, project-based activities necessary to our students’ development of science skills,” said Dr. David Leach, Superintendent of Schools.

Eighth-grade students will use the equipment in their earth science classes. Seventh-grade students will use the equipment in the “Medical Detectives” unit of the science curriculum. Created by Project Lead the Way, a national nonprofit provider of K-12 STEM curriculum, “Medical Detectives” encourages medical exploration by giving clues, such as DNA or genetic testing results, and requiring data analysis to solve medical mysteries about the human body. Warwick Valley Central School District has successfully introduced many other Project Lead the Way units throughout its middle school and high school curricula.

“Based on the enthusiasm generated by Project Lead the Way units in other STEAM areas, the District is eager to implement ‘Medical Detectives’ and give all seventh-grade students the opportunity to learn about science and test their science knowledge in a fun and interesting way,” said Dr. Leach.
