Warwick Valley High School’s Portfolio class wins grand prize at Crystal Springs Resort’s Great Jack-O-Lantern competition.

November 2, 2020

Warwick Valley High School’s Portfolio class and their Star Wars-themed display of carved pumpkins won the grand prize and the People’s Choice Award in the Crystal Springs Resort’s 5th annual Great Jack-O-Lantern display and competition.

Art teacher Kristen Spano and her students created a display complete with interactive props showcasing the student’s artistically-carved pumpkin masterpieces. Samantha Molinelli was the class Art Director and selected the Star Wars characters and ships for the event. She also created a sound bite playlist that ran on a loop to establish the mood for the night’s show.

Julia Redpath created a 4-foot TIE Fighter, Maritess Cobane and Kelly Lo designed a Landspeeder. Maya Bialas and Madeleine Gawronski created a 3-foot Millennium Falcon, Olivia Quinones designed the Star Destroyer, Erin Eicher created a 2-foot Death Star, Deanna Ibbetson constructed an X-Wing and Patrick Gardiner created a AT-AT. All the props were created out cardboard and hot glue. The entire class collaborated to make 31 individually carved pumpkins, including some with carvings of Hans Solo, Chewbacca and Luke Skywalker.

The grand prize was an award of $1,000 to benefit the Warwick Valley High School Art Department.
