Veterans Day celebration at Park Avenue Elementary School honors local vets

on November 10, 2016

On Thurs., Nov. 10, 2016, Park Avenue Elementary School held its annual Veterans Day celebration in honor of all of our local veterans.

Veterans, guests, administrators and staff were treated to patriotic musical selections by the Middle School Wire Choir, the National Anthem performed by eighth-grade singers, and wonderful singing by the entire Park Avenue student body. Refreshments were provided by the PTA.

The following is a speech written by Park Avenue fourth-grader Cole Haskew, which he read to those in attendance:

As we celebrate Veterans Day, I feel proud to be standing up here honoring all American veterans who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines, to defend our freedom. We thank you for your bravery, dedication and sacrifice.

In order to keep our country free, these brave people sacrifice holidays, family time and special occasions that we sometimes take for granted. It is also important to thank the families of our veterans for what they give up, by showing us how important it is to support the ones we love.

A veteran with his grandchildI have a special appreciation for this day because I am a proud grandson of two veterans. One having served as a medic during World War II, and the other served during peace time on a Navy ship. They both make me so proud to be an American.

Remember that veterans are everywhere; they are teachers, doctors, postal workers, custodians and moms and dads. So please take the time on this Veterans Day, or any other day, to think about those who served and came home and those who didn’t.

Our entire class will remember the reasons you and others fought so hard for our freedoms, and how thankful we are every day for putting yourself at risk to protect us and our country. You are a true hero and role model for everyone.

Thank you so much for making our country the great country it is today. I hope you enjoy your day of honor…you deserve it!
