WVMS hosts Valentines for Vets Breakfast

May 25, 2022

This morning, WVMS hosted its annual Valentines for Vets Breakfast in a tented event outside of the Middle School. After a two-year hiatus, everyone was glad to have this very special event back. The weather was perfect and the turnout was fantastic! The WVMS Wildcat Ambassadors made their guests feel welcome, and students from both the Middle School and High School, in collaboration with WVCSD Food Services, handled all of the prep, cooking, presentation, and service (not to mention, the entertainment) for the event.

The morning opened with welcomes from WVMS Associate Principal Jared Yapkowitz and WVMS Principal Georgianna Diopoulos, who turned the mic over to emcee, social studies teacher Joan Rueckert. A local color guard presented the American flag as members of the Honors Symphony Orchestra performed the Star Spangled Banner. The ensemble followed that with the Armed Services Medley, during which veterans stood as the anthem of their branch of the military played.

NYS Senator Mike Martucci was glad to be on hand for the event, and shared his gratitude for both the veteran’s service to their country, and the students’ hard work in presenting the event. After a short address from Veterans Service Agency Director Christian Farrell, the veterans enjoyed a breakfast, complete with omelet station. Students in the Culinary and Home & Careers classes helped prepare breakfast with guidance from their teachers, Corrine Lane and Chelsea Fox. As everyone ate together, the Honors Orchestra, Wire Choir, Honors Chorus, and Ukulele Club all performed.

The event wrapped up with the presentation of cards and gifts by the Wildcat Ambassadors, thanking the gathered veterans for their sacrifice and service.

Organizers thank each student who shared their skills and talents to make their guests feel welcome and put together the meal and musical program. Special thanks to everyone from the district and community who contributed to making this year’s Valentines For Vets Breakfast such a success:
