Transportation Dept. prepares to welcome the 2016-17 school year

on July 29, 2016

This summer, the WVCSD Transportation staff has been busy updating bus routes and checking bus stops to ensure the safety of all our students.

The department has also been getting ready for five new environmentally friendly, propane powered Blue Bird Vision buses, to be delivered in late August.

A new propane fueling station is being installed, and the mechanics are looking forward to training on how to maintain and fuel the propane buses. Propane fueled buses run cleaner (with almost zero emissions) and more quietly than diesel buses. In addition, they warm up more quickly in the winter and require less maintenance.

Transportation Department mechanics continue to keep all our buses in top mechanical condition, and have again achieved an outstanding Department of Transportation (DOT) rating of 99.4 % for the 2015-16 school year. Every bus is inspected by New York State DOT every six months, whether or not it’s on a daily route.

New – bus information notifications by email

This year, the district will implement email notification for student bus information, which will be sent in late August. In an ongoing effort to keep our students safe while waiting at their respective bus stops, bus routes are no longer printed on the school website or in the local newspapers.

Important school bus reminders

Please remember to have your student at the bus stop five minutes prior to their scheduled pick up time. Keep in mind that pick up and drop off times may vary slightly during the first few weeks of school, and your actual pick up and drop off time may end up being different than the original time provided in the email. If you have a safety concern regarding your student’s bus stop, there is a bus stop review form available on the WVCSD Transportation Department webpage. Please review the guidelines on the district webpage when submitting a bus stop review request, and our safety team will review each request individually.

Rules of the road

Students should ride their assigned bus only. Students are not permitted to ride an alternate bus or “switch” buses to or from school for sleepovers, playdates, birthday parties or other activities outside of school. Your student’s school office and the transportation office must be notified of any bus or bus stop changes before students board in the morning and prior to dismissal. Changes to a student’s afternoon bus, which include picking up your student, must be made a minimum of 30 minutes prior to dismissal. As always, in the event of an emergency, exceptions will be permitted.

Bus safety drills – keeping our students safe

Bus safety drills are conducted three times a year. The first drill will occur during the first full week of school. Each drill includes instruction regarding the location, use and operation of the emergency exits, fire extinguisher, two-way radio, and first aid kit. Students are instructed about what to do in an emergency, how to exit the bus safely, safe loading and unloading procedures and the importance of proper conduct while on the bus.

Seatbelt use encouraged on buses

In accordance with New York State law, all school buses are equipped with seatbelts, three per seat, for your child’s safety. Seatbelt use is encouraged by our drivers and staff. Please take a moment to discuss with your child the importance of using a seatbelt on the bus, and remind your student how important it is to remain seated whenever they are on the bus to ensure a safe ride to and from school for everyone.
