Superintendent’s Artist of the Week: Juliet Pulido

March 7, 2022

Warwick Valley Middle School fifth grader Juliet Pulido says she has liked music since she was “really little.” This year, however, her musical enjoyment has risen to another level because she’s been able to play the viola with the entire orchestra and sing with the entire chorus.

When Juliet started playing the viola as a fourth grade student in the Distance Learning Academy, she was taking lessons from music teacher Keely Blaikner through the computer.

I really liked distance learning and it was fun to just hear Ms. Blaikner play because she’s really good,” Juliet said. “But I’m really glad that I now can hear the entire orchestra with all the harmonies playing together. I really like it because it’s just so nice to be in person with all of the different instruments. I’d never heard a cello or a bass up until this year.”

Juliet especially enjoyed playing in the winter concerts this year. Her only audience last was her family.

“It was such a great experience to do the whole orchestra,” Juliet said. “I hadn’t been on stage since I was in a talent show in second grade, so it felt really nice to hear everyone and to see so many people that came to hear us.”

Juliet also likes performing with the chorus. She said she loves to hear the altos and sopranos harmonizing and being a part of the entire chorus when it fills the room with amazing music.

“Juliet is an impressive, yet gentle individual,” WVMS music teacher Tamara Moser said. “Music is truly her forte, and she embraces all aspects of it, whether learning in school viola lessons, our large ensembles, general music classes or piano lessons. She has embraced in-person musical instruction whole-heartedly after a year of online learning, and her growth as a budding musician and as a person has been very exciting to see.”

Juliet started playing the piano when she was about 4 years old. Her mom taught her how to read the notes, and how she takes lessons. Juliet also takes art classes outside of school. She said that art kind of goes with music.

Juliet excels academically too. She earned a spot on the high honor roll for the first two marking periods.
