Superintendent’s Artist of the Week: James Kennedy

October 8, 2021

When James “Finn” Kennedy was younger, he hesitated about trying out for the elementary school play or joining the chorus in fifth grade. Now, however, he really enjoys singing and performing.

James, an eighth grader at Warwick Valley Middle School, is in his third year with the school chorus. He also recently earned the lead role in a local performance of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

“I tried to try out for a play in elementary school but I got so scared I couldn’t do it.” James said. “Now I love doing it. In sixth grade, I did chorus, and I had a great time. I liked singing with a big group and being on stage. I also made a lot of friends. And Mr. (Shane) Peters is the best teacher ever. He’s really welcoming to everyone in chorus.”

Chorus is James’ favorite class at WVMS. He said that every time he has chorus, it’s the best day of the week. He also plans to audition for the WVMS play next month.

“Consistently over the last three years, Finn has displayed his singing talents, rising as a leader within the chorus,” Mr. Peters said. “Not only does Finn bring his vocal skills to class, but also his positivity and humor that brightens up the room.”

Over the summer, James started doing plays with the WRC Theatre Company. He was one of the hyenas in “Lion King Junior”. More recently, James auditioned for “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and earned the lead part. Rehearsals for the play have already started, and the performances are scheduled for Dec. 3 and Dec. 4.

“We are so excited for Finn to be a part of our production of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, WRC director Margaret Tench said. “He has a beautiful voice and is going to be an awesome Rudolph. James has been a wonderful addition to our company. He is a friend to all.”

James also plans to be part of the WRC production of “Legally Blonde” in the spring. He sees singing as a way to express himself.

“I definitely want to continue singing and acting,” James said. “Now I like to perform in front of people. I love being on stage. It’s fun, and it’s also building a community with friends that do it too.”
