Teachers are gearing up to welcome students back for 2016-17.

During the Sept. 1 Superintendent’s Conference Day, Warwick’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David Leach, addressed all new and returning teachers, stressing the importance of focusing on what matters most – our students.

He mentioned the three priorities for the year – curriculum, instruction and authentic literacy.

Dr. Leach discussed curriculum as the single largest factor in successful learning for students; how it’s not about using a pre-scripted program, but a plan authored together with colleagues; that there should be significant teacher input and autonomy for teaching professionals in creating a cohesive curriculum.

Teachers heard more about the curriculum mapping set to take place over the next few years in Warwick. Teachers will help craft a K-12 curriculum that doesn’t duplicate lessons and that flows logically from one grade to the next, so there is consistent progression of learning in all disciplines.

Looking at student achievement in Warwick, Dr. Leach pointed out areas where the District has seen gains and others where there is room for improvement. He remains confident, he told the group, that with more input from them as teaching professionals, and strong support from the administrative team, the District can make more gains and increase opportunities for students to succeed. “We need to prepare our students for their future, not our past,” he said.

Finally, Dr. Leach presented commemorative pins to those who have reached service milestones at WVCSD:
