Unified Special Olympic team completes successful season, prepares for September’s Spartan Race

Thunderbolts celebrate the year’s achievements

On Wed., June 10, the Thunderbolts gathered at Sanfordville Elementary School to celebrate their athletic achievements over the past year. The celebration consisted of a great meal, slideshow, and awards for the coaches, volunteers and, of course, the athletes.

The Thunderbolts are a unified special Olympic team that trained throughout the year in track and field events and basketball. In addition, they competed in the Special Olympics spring games at West Point and Brewster, New York. Two of the team’s athletes also competed in the Special Needs Spartan Race at Tuxedo Ridge Ski Center. Finally, an “end of the year” basketball game took place in Newburgh between the Thunderbolts and the Saints.

A unified team joins athletes, with and without intellectual disabilities, on the same team. It is inspired by a simple principle that training and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding (NYS – Special Olympic website). The Thunderbolts encourage any member of the community who would like to come and play with them to contact team representatives.
