Some water outlets at Sanfordville found to exceed state’s new allowable measure for lead

on October 4, 2016

On Mon., Oct. 3, all Sanfordville parents and staff were sent emails and phone calls to inform them of the results of recent testing done at all water outlets at the school. The following information was provided:

As you may be aware, on Sept. 6, 2016, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a new law that requires public schools in New York to test all water outlets currently or potentially used for drinking or cooking purposes for lead levels.

The new law makes New York the first state in the nation to require all of its public schools to conduct lead testing on all sources of potable water.

As you may recall, last spring the District tested the water (not the fixtures) for lead and other contaminants, and all of the drinking water was found to be safe at that time.

In accordance with the new law, the Warwick Valley Central School District has conducted more recent water testing at Sanfordville Elementary School with the assistance of a state-approved laboratory, and 28 faucets were found to exceed the new allowable measure. The affected faucets were not at any of the school’s drinking fountains, but at classroom/bathroom sinks and at two kitchen sinks.

The District’s immediate action will be to take all affected outlets offline. Signs have been posted above those sinks, and all of those fixtures will be replaced as soon as possible, and retested before being put back into service. In the meantime, we will ensure that all students and staff have an adequate supply of water for drinking and cooking.

We will notify you of any additional actions regarding water testing or remediation that may be necessary as we move forward.

Please contact Assistant Superintendent Mr. Timothy Holmes, at 845-987-3000, ext. 10521 (tholmes@wvcsd.org) if you have any questions about our water testing.
