Snow day protocol for 2020-2021 school year

December 4, 2020

Winter will officially be here in just over two weeks, and we’ve already begun seeing morning frost turn up on our lawns and cars. It won’t be long before we’ll be looking at inclement weather and its effects on our District schedule. This year, the Warwick Valley Central School District (WVCSD) will take a new approach to traditional snow days, utilizing remote learning instead of closures as often as possible.

When snow/inclement weather is an issue, the district will switch all students to remote learning. Full closures, including the suspension of remote learning, will remain a possibility for days when inclement weather poses significant safety issues or threatens to affect power and internet connectivity in the area.

These “snow day” decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis, so please carefully monitor all communications from the District. All of the District’s regular notification procedures will continue, including texts, calls, and emails, depending on your School Messenger preferences.

If weather-related issues result in a pivot to remote learning, students will be expected to log into Google Classroom and follow the daily schedule set by their teacher(s). Should inclement weather occur during one of the District’s pauses of in-person learning, students should log on as planned unless a school announcement tells them otherwise. The District also understands that weather may present technical limitations for some families and teachers.

We made this adjustment to minimize the loss of valuable instruction days and believe this decision is in the best interests of our students’ academic needs. This plan also allows the District to have additional flexibility to the student calendar during these uncertain times.

Thank you all for your attention to this new weather-related protocol. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher(s).
