WVMS students build their knowledge of architecture concepts in tech class

Raise your hand if you remember woodshop!

Recently, Warwick Valley Middle School students in technology teacher Benjamin Heyer's class were working on their own wood projects. No simple birdhouses here, though! Instead, the students designed and built 3/4-scale model sheds.

The Design Engineering Process is integrated into learning across all grades in Warwick Valley. It involves a systematic approach to problem-solving that includes defining a problem, brainstorming solutions, and then designing, creating, and testing a solution. These steps are followed by improvements and retesting.

The shed project challenges students' conceptual and hands-on abilities, from the design phase to cutting and assembling their balsa wood components. The project also reinforces key architectural and structural concepts, such as wall framing, roof trusses, and material precision.
