WVMS national juniuor honor society members write letters to their elders

The members of the Warwick Valley Middle School chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) recently participated in National Write a Letter to an Elder Day. The project, sponsored by the Warwick Valley Post Office, invited students to send valentines to local senior citizens.

NJHS members led by example, modeling not only civic engagement but compassion throughout the project. The initiative brightened the days of local seniors and showcased the values at the heart of the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. Warwick Valley emphasizes traits such as empathy, responsibility, and active citizenship—qualities the NJHS members displayed through their participation. By reaching out to those who may feel isolated, the students demonstrated how small acts of kindness can make a significant difference, aligning with the district's vision of graduates who are engaged, caring members of their community.

"We couldn't be more proud of these students for their thoughtfulness and the enthusiasm and intention with which they took on this project," said eighth grade ELA teacher Janna Milazzo. "Their efforts were warmly received, and they received a touching thank you valentine from Sapphire Nursing Home."

The students' cards were delivered by the post office to seniors residing in Schervier Pavilion, Valley View, Glen Arden, and Sapphire Nursing homes. National Write a Letter to Elder Day serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering connections between generations. Through this program, Warwick Valley Middle School students proved that civic mindedness is alive and well, and that the next generation is ready to lead with heart and purpose.
