Youth in Government wraps up an exciting and engaged year

The Youth in Government (YIG) Program finished the 2025/2026 school year with great excitement. First, the program welcomed more new members from the middle school. Over a dozen WVMS students joined to learn about the program and build new relationships with veteran team members. New ideas were cultivated, and passions ignited to formulate a great vision for the new school year.

In April, several YIG students were invited to attend Orange County Service Day to celebrate all the local high schools' Youth In Government programs. The event took place at the Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY. The Youth In Government Program is supported by OU-BOCES, which has been in existence for over 75 years. The WVHS YIG Program is co-advised by social studies teacher Mr. Ottochian and Mr. Safier, a social studies/special education teacher.

Students met and shadowed Orange County Government officials, including the Supreme and Family Courts, the Clerk's office, and the legislature. Some attendees sat in the legislative chambers and participated in a mock debate while legislators observed. After finishing their session, students stayed in the chambers to network about possible internships and discuss career choices.

The WVHS YIG Program is grateful to the Orange County Government for hosting our future leaders. A special thanks to the Orange County Youth Bureau for coordinating a smooth day, and appreciation to the Orange County legislators for being so welcoming to our students—especially the Warwick/Greenwood Lake/Chester legislators Barry Cheney, Paul Ruszkiewicz, Jonathan Redeker, and Glen Ehlers. The YIG group also wanted to send a special note of thanks to the Orange County Sheriff's Deputies for ensuring everyone's safety during the event.

When asked to reflect on the day, Mr. Ottochian said, "It was truly incredible! These inspiring leaders might soon be running and interviewing for current government officials' positions. I have no doubt that America's future is bright because our students are committed to the rule of law and possess a spirit to serve. Needless to say, it was an amazing day to be an educator. It reinforced why I have chosen to teach and inspire the future."

Also, in April, students were invited to Local Government Day at the county's Emergency Services and Sheriff's Offices. While in both facilities, students met many individuals on the front lines, ensuring the county's safety and security. Before entering the 911 Emergency Services Dept. command center, students received a brief overview presentation by officials, including Robert Doss, Deputy Commissioner - Police Liaison/Division of Police Services of the Orange County Department of Emergency Services. The students asked many probing questions, which helped them learn more about how local government works. Moreover, they got to see and hear how the government works in real time while in the 911 command center.

The second half of the day was spent in the Sheriff's Office, providing more real-world learning experiences. Upon entering the facility, students met many deputies from different departments, including SWAT, Investigations, Crime Lab, and the Claims Office. Each department official gave a brief overview of their role and how they contribute to the criminal justice system. For all the students, the highlight of the day was meeting these heroes and asking how their education prepared them for their government jobs. Overall, students were thankful to have met so many people and to have had inspiring discussions about how this field trip will motivate them to explore careers in law enforcement. We give a big thank you to all officials from the Emergency Services and OC Sheriff's Offices for welcoming our students, and look forward to returning in 2027.

Lastly, two students had the opportunity to travel to Albany to celebrate their election victories. Juliet Thomas was nominated as the People's Party candidate for New York State Governor, and Madison Tyzloir was selected as the People's Party candidate for New York State Attorney General at a nominating convention back in November. Each student participated in a mock election across all participating Youth in Government schools and won. This granted them the opportunity to go to Albany with other state position winners to learn more about how the state government works and to meet government officials. A special thanks to Assemblyman Brabenec and Senator Skoufis for meeting with our students. Their inspiration to serve the public continues to not only motivate students like Juliet and Madison, but all participating members.

The WVHS YIG Program is excited for the 2026-2027 year ahead. Participation in the Youth In Government club supports the Warwick Valley Central School District’s Portrait of a Graduate by fostering skills such as critical thinking, civic responsibility, and effective communication. Whether students are learning about local government, engaging in debates, or building relationships with community leaders, they are developing the qualities and competencies outlined in the district’s vision. The positive impact the program is having on our students would not be possible without the continued support of WVHS and WVMS administrators, the Board of Education, and Central Administration.
