WVHS Youth in Government students meet with state representatives in Albany for Library Lobby Day

WVHS Youth in Government students meet with state representatives in Albany for Library Lobby Day

The Warwick Valley High School Youth in Government Program joined librarians from the Ramapo Catskill Library System for New York Library Association’s annual Library Lobby Day at the State Capitol in Albany, on Feb. 5. Members of the program were joined by advisor Mr. Kevan Ottochian and chaperones Mr. Scott Meyer and Mr. Jereme Safier rallied with librarians to secure funding for libraries and other educational endeavors.

The YIG team met with Assemblyman Karl Brabenec and Senator James Skoufis to discuss the budget process and how it affects library funding. Not only did students’ advocate for libraries, but also the state legislators shared new initiatives to expand the library’s community outreach as possible future collaborations with the Youth in Government Program. Furthemore, the group made history by being recognized by the New York State Assembly. Thanks to Assemblyman Brabnec, the Assembly took a moment during their work day to pause and applaud the group’s civic efforts. The students and advisors were grateful to have this special moment. They also had the opportunity to join librarians and other community stakeholders for a peaceful rally in the Capitol.

Since the early 2000s under then Advisor Mr. Scott Meyer, the lobbying trip continues to be monumental for providing members the opportunity to participate in democracy and forge a positive impact on our community. The WVHS Youth in Government Program looks forward to continuing to advocate for libraries. Advisor Ottochian repeated that the WVHS Youth in Government Program remains committed and dedicated to its efforts to nurture life-long learners and leaders due to the ongoing support from WVHS and WVMS administrations, Board of Education and the district administration.
