Sanfordville second graders experiment with green chocolate

Sanfordville Elementary School second graders experiment with green chocolate on St. Patrick's Day.

Sanfordville Elementary School second graders in Mr. Haber's class tested the physical properties of chocolate to learn about reversible and irreversible changes as part of their science curriculum. Because the experiment was conducted on St. Patrick's Day, Mr. Haber decided to use green chocolate.

Before Mr. Haber put the chocolate in the microwave, students wrote down their predictions about whether the heated chocolate would remain a solid or turn into a liquid or a gas. Thee second graders also made predictions about whether the cooled chocolate would reverse back to a solid form or stay a liquid.

After the chocolate melted in the microwave (and turned into a liquid), the second graders dipped pretzel sticks into the chocolate and waited for it to cool. When the green chocolate cooled, it did turn back into a solid - and into a delicious snack.
