Visiting reptiles help kick off the PARP - Pick a Reading Partner - program at Sanfordville

Erin Micelli of Snakes-n-Scales shows students an alligator snapping turtle.

Sanfordville Elementary School students were treated to a reptile show for the PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) kickoff last week. During PARP, the entire school will be reading the same book for the next three weeks.

The book is Zoey & Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro. Sanfordville students will be joining Zoey and Sassafras on their journey of taking care of a dragon. Zoey can see all magical creatures just like her mom and can help them when they are sick.

As part of PARP,  students will also get to partake in several other activities like making science goggles, filling out their own travel science journals to figure out was is wrong with their own magical creatures (which are given to them in a plushie form), and enjoy a rice crispy pajama day.

During the reptile show, sponsored by the Sanfordville PTA, Erin Mellini of Snakes-N-Scales showed the students Rocky the boa constrictor, Lollipop the blue-tongued skink, Chompers the alligator snapping turtle and Lemonhead the albino Burmese python.

Ms. Mellini told the students about the reptiles' rescue stories and about how they are important to the environment. For example, reptiles eat insects and rodents that carry disease.
