Sanfordville first graders grow their own plants

A Sanfordville first grader uses a magnifying glass to look at a plant he is growing.

Last week, the first graders in Mrs. Esserman and Mr. Hernandez’s class were treated to a visit by Mrs. Colgan, the K-12 Agricultural Education Consultant for Agriculture Week. Ms. Colgan taught a lesson for the students to conclude their science unit on plants and then helped the students plant Bibb lettuce seeds.

On Monday, the students got a chance to closely examine their plants and then write about their observations in a Plant Journal. The journal also included a drawing showing what the plant looks like.

One student wrote, "There are 13 sprouts. That's a lot. And some of the buds are opening up." Another student noted that the plants were getting taller and that the tops were green.

The class will continue to monitor and write about their plants for the next few weeks. Then the students will take the lettuce home and continue to watch them grow.
