Sanfordville athletes compete at 2026 Orange County Elementary Special Olympics

On June 4th, students from Sanfordville Elementary School participated in the 10th Annual Orange County Elementary Special Olympics at Goshen High School. More than 200 athletes from 10 school districts showcased their basketball shooting, dribbling and passing skills during the competition.

The event started with opening ceremonies in the auditorium. After the Wee Wildcats and other teams marched across the stage for the parade of athletes and recited the Special Olympics oath, the torch was lit. The competition then began in two gymnasiums.

"It was a great day for our 14 competing student athletes," coach Amanda Undersinger said. "They enjoyed showing off all of the basketball skills they learned over the past two months of practicing. I would like to also thank all the coaches and volunteers who helped at practices and on the day of the Olympics."

Each athlete displayed their basketball skills in basketball by completing a timed 10-yard dribble in a straight line, making chest passes aimed at a 3-foot by 3-foot target and shooting baskets.

The day concluded with the awards ceremony where athletes were given awards and had the opportunity to stand on the podium. The closing ceremonies also included a passing of the torch from Goshen to the Port Jervis School District, which will be hosting the event next year.
