Sanfordville Elementary School celebrates 2026 4th Grade Moving Up Ceremony

On Monday morning, more than 180 graduating fourth graders from Sanfordville Elementary made their way down the aisle and onto the stage of the Warwick Valley High School auditorium to be celebrated by family, teachers, and administration during Sanfordville’s 2026 4th Grade Moving Up Ceremony!

Sanfordville principal Johnna Maraia opened the ceremony by welcoming their guests, thanking families for their support and attendance, and thanking the fourth-grade team for their hard work and dedication, including homeroom teachers, Encore teachers, and support professionals.

“Thank you for preparing these students so well for the next step in their learning journey,” Ms. Maraia said, recognizing each of the fourth-grade classroom teachers who joined their students on stage: Jenny Augelli, Brendan Bauer, Erin Clark, Veronica DeGuisto, Carolyn DeTorres, Stacey Fitzgerald, Jamie Harrington, Carla Overbey, Meghan Ponesse, Emily Rourke, Ali Steinberg, Afdal Tehseldar, and Sherry Wishnia.

Ms. Maraia turned to address the students, celebrating their achievements and personal growth during their time at Sanfordville. She called to mind this year’s yearbook theme, Dream Big!, adding that she has been proud to watch this group of students do exactly that throughout their years together. Ms. Maraia praised their collaboration and communication skills, their creativity in their daily work, and especially their capacity to support one another, solve problems together, and listen respectfully. These, she said, are skills that will help them succeed not only in middle school, but for years to come.

“Remember, your dreams do matter. Dream about who you want to be, what you want to learn, what you want to create, and how you want to help the world. Don't let anyone tell you that your dreams are too big, or too silly, or too different,” she encouraged them. “Be kind to each other, never give up, and always believe in yourselves. Keep dreaming big, be brave, and have a wonderful adventure ahead!”

Next, SES associate principal Tim Ferraro announced the Principal’s Leadership Awards, which recognizes students who consistently demonstrate PAWS Behavior and leadership skills. PAWS is an acronym for the types of actions and decision-making that students are expected to exhibit in school and on buses: Polite actions, Accountable actions, Wise choices, and Safety-First actions.

And the awards went to: Jane Andreo and Matthew Chan in Mr. Bauer’s class; Jacquelynn Kamenas and Adaline Sobczyk-Merson in Ms. Augelli’s class; Yoniel Marquez and Michelle Martinez-Guzman in Ms. Clark’s class; Addison Beers-Wright, Zander Cardine, and Julia Padham from Ms. DeGuisto’s class; Cambria Rinaldi and Kate Shaw in Ms. DeTorres’s class; Ethan Kasprzyk and Lily LaNeve in Ms. Fitzgerald and Ms. Tehseldar’s class; Mia Martinez Crespo in Ms. Overbey’s class; Reagan Hughes and Liliana Martino in Ms. Ponesse’s class; Regan Bright and Maven Gusciora in Ms. Wishnia’s class; Isla Ortiz, William Prendergast, and Finnegan Thornell in Ms. Harrington’s class; Lucy Berry and Nolan McGill in Ms. Rourke’s class; Anthony Barrett, Erol Faraoni, and Scarlet Merkle in Ms. Steinberg’s class.

Mr. Ferraro also presented the NYS Office of the Attorney General Triple “C” Awards, which recognize character, courage, and commitment. Congratulations to Addison Beers-Wright and Erol Faraoni for earning these awards. Finally, just before each classroom teacher read aloud their students' names and presented them with their fourth-grade certificates, music teacher Allison Echevarria led the fourth-grade chorus in a rendition of the class song, Kaleidoscope, by PinkZebra!

To conclude the ceremony, Principal Maraia once more expressed her pride in the graduating class, wishing them happiness and success as they move forward: “Continue to dream big,” she encouraged. “And make those dreams a reality!”
