PIE 3/4 students recognized for earning AG badges

Students in Sanfordville Elementary’s PIE 3-4 classrooms have earned their final three AG Badges of the year and were recognized for their hard work during a ceremony on Thursday morning, outside at the 9/11 Peace Wall & Memorial.

Warwick Valley Central School District agricultural education consultant Nancy Colgan has been working all year with PIE 3-4 teachers Veronica DeGuisto, Jamie Harrington, and Meghan Ponesse on AG Badge projects, and most students were participating for the second year.

During today’s ceremony, they were recognized for earning their:

  • Bee Badge
  • 4 Spheres Badge
  • Fall Crops Badge

Ms. Colgan, a retired educator and Future Farmers of America advisor at Warwick Valley High School, describes the AG Badge program as a precursor to the high school chapter of FFA.

“The AG Badge program has provided students with early, hands-on experiences in agriculture and leadership, similar to what FFA does for our older students,” she said. Ms. Colgan also shared that the program was also partially grant-funded, thanks to a grant application to Orange & Rockland that Ms. Harrington helped write.”

The funding has enabled the program to offer unique learning activities across a wide range of topics, including in-person demonstrations about bees and pollinators, studying the varieties of apples and learning how to make applesauce, examining the geosphere, exploring alternative energy sources like solar and wind—including a visit to a small windmill—doing some soil testing, and more.

“We've had a great experience this year,” said Ms. Colgan to the students. “I want to congratulate all of you for participating!”

Congratulations to all of the PIE 3-4 students who earned their AG Badges this year!
