Park Avenue kindergartners welcome 13 baby chicks with celebration and song

It was a day of chirps and cheers in Theresa Canfield’s kindergarten classroom at Park Avenue Elementary School, where students celebrated the hatching of 13 baby chickens.

The class gave a lively presentation for friends and family, sharing all they’ve learned about chickens, from how they’re born to their surprising abilities, like having excellent memories and the power to see ultraviolet light.

The presentation concluded with a performance of I’m a Little Chicken, a song that tells the story of a chick hatching, something the students had just experienced earlier that week.

“They’re experts on all things chickens now,” Ms. Canfield said with a smile.

After the presentation, students formed a circle on the classroom floor to play with their fluffy new friends and demonstrate the proper handling techniques they had been taught.

As for the newest additions to the Park Avenue family – Shadow, Kat, Marsh, Mellow, Sunny, Midnight, Oreo, Bulldozer (the first born, who entered the world with force!), Chipmunk, Pepper, Chocolate, Parker and Onyx – they’ve found a loving home with Park Avenue’s very own Officer Kat!
