Park Avenue first graders learn about citizenship

Park Avenue Elementary School first graders share the citizenship promises that they wrote.

Over the past few months, Ms. Urvater's first graders at Park Avenue Elementary School have been engaged in a social studies unit all about citizenship. Students explored what it means to be part of a community and thought deeply about the positive qualities they each bring to the world around them.

"We learned the difference between rules and laws, discussed why they are important, and identified the people in our community who help enforce them," Ms. Urvater said. "Students also considered the positive and negative consequences that can happen when rules or laws are followed—or not followed—in real-life situations."

Throughout the unit, first graders learned about important character traits that good citizens demonstrate, such as honesty, compassion and responsibility. As a culminating activity, students wrote a “Citizenship Pinky Promise,” using new vocabulary they have learned and sharing specific ways they plan to show good citizenship at school and at home. Ms. Urvater celebrated their hard work with Good Citizenship Awards to honor their growth and commitment.

This unit was both authentic and relatable to life inside and outside the classroom. The first graders are developing the skills and values they will need to become thoughtful, active members of our community and good citizens who are ready to enter the world and make a difference!
