Park Ave students and their guests visit Albert Wisner Public Library
Second grade students from park Avenue have been studying a very particular style of writing recently. They have been learning how to write and edit... well... "how-to" instructions!
How-to writing helps primary grade students develop essential skills like clear communication, organization, and problem-solving. The students each worked on their own how-to books focused on one central topic: How to plant a sunflower.
First, the students had to learn about the process of planting sunflower seeds themselves. Then, they had to make that information understandable to a broader audience.
The young writers learned just how vital it is to provide specific details and directions when working on a form of writing that is meant to inform and instruct. Again, another timeless skill and basis for all types of sound communication.
Once the students and their guests (many of them grandparents) were gathered at the library, the fun began! The students read their How to Plant a Sunflower directions to their grandparents and guests, as they tried to follow the steps as described.
The activity was a great way to foster an understanding of processes and procedures, even more knowledge that's applicable in the classroom and throughout life.
Thank you to the Albert Wisner Public Library for welcoming Warwick Valley students in, yet again, for another fun educational program!
