WVCSD EdTalk & Photo of the Week: January 7, 2026

warwick valley central school district edtalk and photo of the week

I hope everyone was able to spend quality time with friends and loved ones over the past couple of weeks. As the Warwick Valley Central School District returned from the holiday break, I visited with teachers and classrooms throughout our schools, and I must say that I am impressed with the way our teachers and staff are strategically re-engaging students to help them be successful.

Our classrooms were filled with excitement, energy, and, of course, sometimes a little bit of post-holiday distraction. The transition back to school after time away can be challenging for students of all grade levels. Today, I would like to share some strategies of how our teachers have been re-connecting students and offer practical ways parents can help and support their students at home.

How Teachers Re-Engage Students: Our educators know that the first few days after the break are critical for setting the tone for the rest of the school year. Here are some strategies we use:

Rebuilding Routines: After a few weeks of flexible schedules, students need time to re-establish classroom routines. Teachers start with familiar activities – which include morning meetings, goal-setting exercises, and collaborative projects – to help students feel grounded and secure.

Creating a Warm Welcome: Principals, teachers, and staff often greet students personally, especially at this time. Checking in about their break is a simple act that strengthens relationships with students and reminds them that they belong in our school community.

Reviewing and Refreshing: Before diving into new material, teachers revisit key concepts from before the break. This approach helps students regain confidence and ensures them that no one feels as if they are left behind.

Engaging Through Choice and Creativity: Many classrooms kick off the new year with creative and empowering assignments such as vision boards, reflective writing, or group challenges. These assignments allow students to express themselves while reconnecting with learning.

Focusing on Social-Emotional Needs: Teachers understand that returning from a break can bring mixed emotions and that some students may have struggled emotionally for various reasons during the break. Teachers incorporate activities that encourage teamwork, empathy, and mindfulness to help students emotionally so they are ready to learn.

What Parents Can Do at Home
Parents play an essential role in helping students transition smoothly back into the school routine. Here are a few tips:

Re-establish Sleep and Meal Routines: Consistent sleep and healthy meals make a big difference in focus and energy. Aim for regular bedtimes and balanced breakfasts to start the day strong.

Talk About Goals for the New Year: Ask your child what they’re excited to learn or accomplish. Set small, achievable goals together to boost their motivation and confidence.

Create a Calm Homework Space: After the holiday hustle, re-establishing a quiet, organized spot for homework helps students concentrate and feel prepared.

Stay Positive and Patient: Some students may feel anxious or tired during the first week back. Offer encouragement and remind them that adjusting back to the school routine takes a little time.

Read Together: Whether it’s a chapter book or a news article, reading together strengthens skills and builds a shared love of learning.

Limit Screen Time Before Bedtime: Reducing screen time in the evening helps students wind down and improves sleep quality, which is essential for learning.

The partnership between home and school is important for everyone to maintain for student success. When teachers and parents work together, we create an environment where students feel supported, motivated, and ready to thrive. If you notice your child struggling with the transition, please reach out to their teacher, school counselor, or principal. We are here to help.

Thank you for all you do to make the Warwick Valley Schools strong and your children successful. Here’s to an inspiring second half of the school year!
