Sanfordville PIE program celebrates fourth annual Farm-to-Table Feast

The Sanfordville Elementary School PIE program held its fourth Annual Farm-to-Table Feast this week, a beloved tradition rooted in community, collaboration and gratitude. In the true spirit of PIE, the feast brought together over 150 students in kindergarten through fourth grade, as well as families and teachers from the Warwick community to enjoy a meal almost entirely made by Sanfordville PIE students.

This year’s menu featured pumpkin muffins, apple sauce, pasta with tomato sauce and a regular and three bean salsa with each dish prepared by a different grade level.

But before the feast began, students gathered for a special reading and reflection on the meaning of the Thanksgiving season. PIE teacher Jamie Harrington shared a passage from “Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message,” reminding everyone to pause, appreciate the natural world and give thanks for all living things.

Second graders Harper Anderson and Sadie Weeman helped prepare pumpkin muffins using pumpkins harvested directly from the Sanfordville garden.

“I loved doing the mixing,” Sadie smiled.

First graders Lily and Merit Marzigliano also spent time in the kitchen, proudly sharing that they made so many muffins they had to freeze the extras.

Fourth graders put their culinary skills to the test this year with a three bean salsa, utilizing some of the more advanced cooking techniques they’ve honed over the years.

“My favorite part was chopping it all up,” shared fourth grader Ella Langseder.

For Ella and her classmates, this year’s feast was bittersweet. As fourth graders, it marks their final PIE Fall Feast, a longstanding tradition they’ll miss, but one they say has taught them so much.

After enjoying their meal, students spent time coloring Thanksgiving-themed pages. The finished artwork will be delivered to Schervier Pavilion, spreading a bit of Sanfordville joy to local nursing home residents.

Sanfordville teacher Christine DeLuca, who helps organize the feast each year, said the event continues to be a highlight for students and staff alike.

“I think it's fun for the kids to see what they've harvested and that this is something that they made and that they grew,” she said. “They get really excited. My daughter was really excited this morning. ‘Today’s the feast!’ It’s something special for them to enjoy.”

The Farm-to-Table Feast is one of the many ways the PIE program brings learning to life through hands-on, community-centered experiences. At Sanfordville, those lessons are served with plenty of pride, gratitude, and of course… delicious food.
