Wildcats girls sports post a collectively historic fall season

There has been a lot of exciting news out of Wildcats Country since September, and our girls' varsity teams have been at the forefront of much of it, putting together a collectively historic fall season that has showcased remarkable talent, determination, and teamwork.

It’s not hyperbole to say that Wildcats fans will be talking about the accomplishments of the 2025 soccer and volleyball squads for years (and years) to come. And that’s not meant to diminish the tennis team’s definitive defense of their Section 9 title, or the fact that our swim team and cross-country team both had athletes qualify for sectional and/or state tournaments! Under the guidance of their dedicated coaches, these teams have not only proven their prowess on the field and court but have also exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and resilience that defines Wildcat spirit and inspires Wildcat pride.

SOCCER

The Wildcats posted a stellar record of 16-3-1 under the leadership of second-year head coach Taylor Mann, securing the team's first Section IX Championship since 1982. The Wildcats clinched the title with a decisive 3-0 victory over the Washingtonville Wizards on November 1. In a thrilling NYSPHAA quarterfinal matchup the following weekend, the Wildcats narrowly defeated Horseheads 3-2.

This powerful Wildcats team featured standout striker Johannah Bradley, who scored two goals in the quarterfinals and an impressive total of 34 goals for the season. The contributions from the Currid sisters, Ciara and Teagan, were vital throughout the season. Notably, Bradley, along with two other senior players, Erin Kelly (defender) and Carly McLaughlin (defender), were selected to the Section 9 Girls Soccer Coaches Association All-Star team. Good luck to the Wildcats as they head into their NYSPHAA semifinal matchup this Saturday at Dryden High School!

VOLLEYBALL

The Wildcats entered the playoffs with a regular season record of 10-6 under long-time coach Shawn Thomas. As the third seed, the Wildcats first took down the second-seed Minisink Valley in the semifinals, then secured a dramatic come-from-behind victory against the top-seed Cornwall Dragons in the championship match at Mount Saint Mary: 25-22, 27-29, 25-14, 25-22, 15-12. This victory marked the team's first title in 30 years and ended Cornwall's impressive 20-year championship streak.

Remarkably, many players on the court during the match weren't even born when Cornwall's streak began! An earlier defining moment for this hard-working team with exceptional chemistry was their October comeback win over Monroe-Woodbury. The game established a tone for the rest of the season, fueled by two of the team's leaders: Genevieve Boyle with 22 kills and Peyton Komorsky with 21 assists. Boyle also excelled in the championship match, posting 25 kills, 23 digs, and 3 blocks against Cornwall. At the same time, Komorsky contributed 27 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs. Another key player, Victoria Martinez, added 23 assists, 11 digs, and 2 aces during the title match.

Good luck to the Wildcats as they represent Section 9 this Saturday, taking on the Section 4 team from Horseheads!

TENNIS

The varsity girls tennis team and coach William Zwart wrapped up its regular season with an impressive 12-0 record, marking its second undefeated season in a row. The Wildcats captured the OCIAA Championship with a victory over Monroe-Woodbury. They went on to win a second successive Section 9 Team Championship against Wallkill. Their journey came to an end against the defending state champions, Section 1’s Horace Greeley, in a regional state match.

In individual play, all nine eligible Wildcat girls qualified for the OCIAA singles and doubles championships in October. Notably, the singles players were all in just eighth grade: Keri Leahey, Piper Stewen, and Leah Scalo. All three performed admirably in the Section 9 tournament but were ultimately eliminated by the tournament's top finishers – all upperclassmen. The doubles teams featured Celia Greco and Bianka Grzesik, Hailee Oppmann and Grace Cornelius, and Nina Cirillo and Anika Brezina. Greco/Grzesik secured second place in the Section 9 tournament, while Oppmann/Cornelius finished in third place; both teams qualified for the NYSPHAA Tennis Championships held in the Billie Jean King Center at the US Open Complex on October 27-29, 2025.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Congratulations are in order for Wildcats Cross-Country runner Madison Olszewski, who qualified for the NYSPHSAA Cross-Country Championships this Saturday! Madison earned her spot by recording a time of 19:40 on the 5K course at Sanfordville during the Warwick Valley-hosted OCIAA XC Championships on October 25. Coach Charles Sommerland and Madison head to Queensbury High School this weekend, where she will compete in the Class A race at 10:30 am.

SWIMMING

Warwick Valley swimmers, led by WVMS teacher and coach Nicole Rose, also made a splash this fall, with swimmers qualifying for playoff and championship berths.

Addison Kleveno won two silver medals at the OCIAA Division 2 Championships, recording personal bests of 25.5 and 57.6 in the 50 and 100 Free events, respectively. At the Section 9 Championship, Addison competed in four events, making it to the finals in the 50 Free and 100 Free, as well as in the 200- and 400-Meter Free Relays.

Vivian House also swam at the Section 9 Championship in the 100 Free. Additionally, House posted a personal best of 28.50 while leading off the 200 Free Relay at the tournament. Jillian Shaw also qualified for the Section 9 Championship in the 100 Meter Fly and recorded a personal best time of 1:09.

The Wildcats also had three relay teams compete in the Section 9 tournament. The Medley Relay team included Breann Walsh, Kamryn Kleveno, Emma Predmore and Caitlyn Coyle. Both the 200 and 400 Free Relay teams included Addison and Vivian, along with Lillian Jocelyn and Joesphine Lorentzen.

As the fall season approaches its final days and match-ups, the achievements of the Warwick Valley girls' teams stand as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes and their coaches. The victories, records, and personal bests achieved this season have not only elevated their respective programs but have also inspired their classmates -- especially younger Wildcats -- and the entire community. This fall has been a truly unforgettable chapter in the history of Warwick Valley Athletics.
