Planting at the PLAV: Pine Island students beautify veterans memorial

May 18, 2021

Kindergarten students from Ms. Theresa Canfield’s class made their way last Thursday from Pine Island Elementary to the Polish Legion of American Vets (PLAV) Post 16 (With a local police escort, no less!) to plant some colorful spring flowers near the Veterans Memorial on Pulaski Highway.

It was a beautiful day for gardening and good deeds, and the students did a great job planting and decorating their landscaping project. Each new bud was also adorned with a small American flag.

On hand to lend a hand to the students were Principal John Russo, teacher’s aide Maggie Mahon, PLAV representative Frank Rzeczkowski, and former Pine Island parents JoAnn Jados and Marie Murtie. A very special thank you to Officer Katie Oresto for helping everyone get safely to and from the memorial.

Check out the district’s Facebook page for some video of the students singing a couple patriotic numbers after their planting session!
