Pine Island students come out of their creative shells with turtle art project

October 13, 2021

Kindergarteners throughout Pine Island Elementary School had a wonderful time learning how to draw turtles during art classes with Ms. Sunwha Gil recently. The project also had them learning all about shapes, symmetry, and more, along the way.

“There were a lot of learning elements in this simple lesson,” explained Ms. Gil. “We started out exploring symmetry by looking at cat faces and turtles, but when the students loved the turtles so much, we added more ‘turtle steps’ to the project.”

The Turtle Project presented three objectives: Learning basic shapes (such as circles, ovals, and triangles); Identifying those different shapes; Understanding how shapes can be used in drawing. With sketchbooks, Sharpies, scissors and crayons in hand — and their creativity sparked — the students worked together to make some fantastic pieces.

“The students were so imaginative, and really put their own ideas into the project,” said Ms. Gil. “They picked up on the lessons we were going for, while also learning that drawing a turtle can be a lot of fun!”

Ms. Gil wrapped up her lessons by getting students engaged in collaborative clean-up efforts around their classrooms, and let them each know what a great job they had done.

“They were all awesome,” she said. “I am so proud of them, and I can’t wait for the other projects coming up this year.”
