Park Avenue Class of `22 builds Little Free Library as gift to school/community

June 2, 2022

Congratulations and thank you to the members of the Park Avenue Elementary School fourth grade Student Council, who completed their final service project of the year last week. They put the finishing touches on the Park Avenue Class of 2022’s parting gift to the school – a Little Free Library!

“The students brainstormed many ideas,” said student council advisor Amy Buliung. “They came up with the idea of an outdoor library that students and families in the community could visit after school hours to share books.”

You’ve probably seen a Little Free Library. The book-sharing boxes – often brightly decorated, mounted on posts in pedestrian areas – have been popping up all over. In fact, more than 100,000 Little Free Libraries are registered worldwide through the nonprofit organization of the same name!

With assistance from the Park Avenue PTA, the student council purchased the materials to build its box from Little Free Library. Student council members worked together to paint the panels and door frame in Wildcats colors. Then, they worked with Principal “Bob the Builder” Biniaris, to assemble the free library and put on the final trim and decorative touches.

“Each student signed the inside of the outdoor library during the student council pinning ceremony,” said Ms. Buliung. “They’ve already reached out to their fellow fourth-grade classmates and asked them each to bring in a book, which they will use to keep the library filled throughout the summer.”

Community members are encouraged to stop by and take a book – or share a book – anytime!

The Park Avenue Little Free Library will be officially presented to the school during the fourth grade moving up ceremony on June 16. It will be part of a global book-sharing movement that is building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all.

Great work, everyone!
