Park Avenue kindergarteners spread kindness while celebrating the importance of reading

It’s a beautiful day in Lorie Ingber’s and Katie’s Caswell’s kindergarten “neighborhood.”

The kindergarteners in their Park Avenue classroom had a busy day spreading kindness and celebrating World Kindness Day today, Nov. 13.

World Kindness Day is celebrated to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which can binds people.  It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement,

It’s also World Cardigan Day, an opportunity for people wear a cardigan to remember the impact Fred Rogers had on the world.

 The day honors Fred Rogers, known for his iconic red sweaters. Mr. Rogers — an icon for kindness — is remembered for his efforts to promote goodness and kindness in the world, as well as appreciating people for who they are and their special qualities. An innovator of children’s television, his salt-of-the-earth demeanor and genuinely gentle nature taught a generation of kids the value of kindness.

To honor Mr. Rogers, Mrs. Ingber’s and Mrs. Caswell’s little students wore their own special versions of “Mr. Rogers cardigans,” and learned about him during a class discussion.

Also, to add to the specialness of the day, the class ended its first reading unit by having a small parade to the school’s administrative offices to show off the books they read.

And, they showed they were beginning to understand the importance of reading.

“You have to read all by yourself in kindergarten,” said Claire Stough.

Nicholas Baker agreed and added: “Sometimes your mom and dad really want you to read by yourself because they have things to do.”
