Park Ave student applies tape to her index-card tower. As part of the observance of National Engineers Week, Ms. Melican coordinated an all-girls design challenge titled, “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.”

Park Ave student tapes together a square structure made of index cards. The challenge consisted of building a tower with a set number of index cards and tape-length. Participants could trade the two supplies, such as more tape for a few cards, and vice versa. The level of difficulty was adjusted to the students grade-level. Each tower design was unique, and most stood long enough for a picture.

The activity sparked conversations on the importance of the engineering field, the shortage of women in engineering careers, and “never giving up,” even if our design fails.
