MS student-athletes run successful coat drive to help neighbors in need

on February 11, 2016

As a service to the surrounding community, Warwick Valley Middle School modified athletes dedicated their time coordinating the 2016 Coat Drive for those in need.

Beginning in January, athletes met with coaches, guidance counselors and administrators to discuss the initiative. They planned some publicity, scheduled time to decorate bins for donations, and volunteered to make announcements during the first week of the drive. With the cooperation of coach and WVCSD Athletic Director Greg Sirico and the athletic department, coaches partnered with athletes to help keep members of the Warwick community warm.

Throughout the end of January and beginning of February, the bins overflowed with coats of all kinds. In fact, there were so many items given that people began to ask if they could bring in footwear as well. The result was not only a bin brimming with boots, but approximately 175 donated jackets and coats!

We would like to recognize the Warwick Valley Middle School modified athletes for their charitable work and thank all of the members of the school community who helped coordinate the drive and those who gave so generously. All donations will be sent to the Hope Chest Clothing Closet in Pine Island. These charitable efforts are an inspiration for all and have helped warm the lives of so many in need.
