Major distributor of chicken products to schools issues recall

on April 27, 2016

Dear Warwick families,

The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that the Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. is recalling more than 4.5 million pounds of fully cooked chicken products, including chicken patties and chicken nuggets, due to possible contamination. According to the USDA website, the recalled chicken products may be contaminated with extraneous materials such as plastic, wood, rubber and metal.

The Waco, Texas, company shipped the products to grocery stores and institutions like schools nationwide.

The Food Services Department has not confirmed that Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. chicken products have been served to students during the school year.

Once notified of the recall, the WVCSD Food Services Department immediately removed all Pilgrim’s Pride products from its cafeterias as a preventative measure.

The District is working with the distributor and USDA to identify any potential contaminated products.

The USDA reports that there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
