Letter from WVCSD Health & Attendance Coordinator

August 12, 2020

Please read the following letter about actions parents can take to help keep their children make a safe return to school.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the Warwick Valley Central School District prepares to reopen our schools we would like to partner with you to prepare your children. We recognize that nothing could have prepared us for this current situation and the abrupt way we ended in-person instruction in March. We must do our best to limit the introduction of COVID-19 into our buildings.

The protective actions you have been practicing for many months are the same ones that will be reinforced at school. Hand washing, face coverings and social distancing are the new norms. You and your children have been using these safeguards when you leave your homes and now is the time to help them to expect the same in school. With that in mind, below are some suggestions.

• Practice hand washing for a FULL twenty seconds. Sing the Happy Birthday song twice or Twinkle, twinkle little star… so they are familiar with the time it takes and remind them to wash between fingers, palm and top of hand to the wrist
• Demonstrate how to use hand sanitizer — a small amount and good friction, (just like washing hands!) until dry
• Help them understand what six feet really is! Draw a chalk line on your driveway or place two chairs six feet apart. Let them know they will be sitting that far apart in class

While these are geared to the youngest of our students, we ask that you have a conversation with your older children as well.

Give children the opportunity to get comfortable with masks at home and be less resistant to wearing them in school.

When your children know that you support these behaviors, students may be less frightened or resistant and are more likely to follow the teacher’s instructions.

Most importantly, we must work together to keep the entire school community, students and staff, safe and well.

As you make any “vacation” plans this month, please remember to consult the New York State travel list to avoid having to quarantine for 14 days when you return. You can call the hot line at 1-888-364-3064 or click https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory

The District will be sending out additional communications in the coming days/weeks.

Thank you,

Marguerite Adams
Coordinator of Health & Attendance (Retired)
