Motivational speaker Billy Keenan reminds WVHS Leadership Academy students they can do anything
Motivational speaker Billy Keenan spoke to members of the Warwick Valley High School Leadership Academy, along with other interested students, on Nov. 15, imploring them to realize that in times of adversity, it is possible to overcome obstacles and solve problems.
Mr. Keenan, a quadriplegic, activist for spinal cord injuries, a retired military serviceman, well-known musician and former high school history teacher, shared his story about his life to a hushed audience of about 125 students.
A 2013 catastrophic surfing accident changed his life instantly. Doctors weren’t sure if he’d ever be able to breathe on his own again.
His story of resiliency was intended to demonstrate to students that anyone can claw their way back to a fulfilling life if they find the motivation and will to do so.
“I’ve managed to find a way to keep moving forward,” he told students. “I want you to remember the man in the wheelchair. You are able-bodied and able-minded. There is absolutely nothing you cannot do. Imagine what you can achieve, the adversity you can fight through and withstand. In the end, the decision is yours.”
