It’s all about writing at Park Avenue! #TheirFuture

on December 5, 2016

Recently, Park Avenue kindergarteners studied the patterned text in the books Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do You See?, Polar Bear, Polar Bear What do You Hear?, and Panda Bear, Panda Bear What do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. The students then wrote their own, “I see” patterned text sentences.

Students also practiced reading and identifying patterned text independently. The children really enjoyed bringing the books home in their reading bags to read to their families.

Second Grade students in Mrs. Cassidy’s class integrated a research writing project with the story, “A Walk in the Desert.” Below is an example of one student’s work detailing what he found interesting about the desert.

Fourth-grade classes spent time reading mentor texts, as authors learn from other authors. During one of the mini-lessons, students learned that some authors write about a small moment and then make that writing very big by adding sensory details. “My Momma’s Kitchen” and “Owl Moon” provided lots of rich examples of sensory details. Students added rich details to their own writing and produced amazing results:
