Ways to improve attendance for younger students

  • Know the school’s attendance policy and when school starts.
  • Before a new school year, make sure your child has the required vaccinations.
  • Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Schedule medical appontments after school.
  • Don’t plan extended trips when school is in session.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Get advice from teachers, school counselors or other parents if your child seems anxious about going to school. Complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and may not be a reason to stay home.
  • Keep your child home only when truly sick.

For older students
