Esteemed poet Maria Mazzoti-Gillan visits Sanfordville Elementary School

Poet facilitates poetry and creative writing workshops at SES

One of America’s most esteemed poets, Maria Mazzoti-Gillan, was the guest of Sanfordville Elementary School, on Friday, November 21.

Her appearance at Sanfordville preceded a gala reading at the Albert Wisner Public Library.

Ms. Gillan is a recipient of The American Book Award, one of the nation’s highest literary honors. She is Founder and Executive Director of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College in Paterson, N.J. Indeed, the city of Paterson, founded by Alexander Hamilton, who had hoped that the city would become our nation’s capital, was home to a number of poets of note, including William Carlos Williams and Allen Ginsberg.

Ms. Gillan is also Director of the Creative Writing Program and Professor of Poetry ant SUNY Binghamton. She has published more than twenty books, and her poetry has been read by Garrison Keeler on National Public Radio. She has appeared on Charles Osgood’s CBS program and has been featured on the PBS program, “All Things Considered”.

At Sanfordville, Ms. Gillan facilitated two poetry and creative writing workshops for the students and staff.
