For the past five years, the Warwick Valley Central School District has presented the Jodi Denmead Outstanding Parent Volunteer Award to deserving volunteers, in honor and memory of Jodi Denmead, who was a very active parent volunteer in our school PTAs.

This year’s recipient, Monika Schonhaut, began her PTA participation at Kings Elementary School. She helped with the Kings Carnival, science fair, Reflections arts program and the garden club. The garden club introduced students to an enriched educational experience in an outdoor setting, an experience which continues to flourish in our district.

At the Middle School, Monika took on the position of MS PTA Vice President, chaired PTA events, ran the longtime craft fair fundraiser, and re-established the STEAM Fair, events which continue as significant activities.

As her children moved on to the high school, Monika assumed the role of WVHS PTSA Vice President, and focused on the arts in our district. She coordinated the Artaplooza event and the high school’s participation in the PTA-sponsored Reflections arts program.

During the current 2015-16 school year, Monika has continued to be an active volunteer as the WVHS PTSA President. This year’s focus has been on legislation and advocacy, as well as providing parents with enrichment opportunities. The PTSA has organized meetings for parents to learn about such topics as Naviance, a college & career readiness software program to help WVHS students connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals, and SEPTA, the special education PTA organization.

As the chairperson of the HS PTA Reflections program once again this school year, Monika worked with HS art teacher, Kristen Spano, to coordinate 25 student entries, which swept the visual arts category in the Hudson Valley region.

In presenting Monika Schonhaut with this year’s Jodi Denmead Outstanding Parent Volunteer Award, WVCSD Board of Education member and current PTA Council President, Erin Maxcy, expressed appreciation for Monika’s many years of volunteerism and dedication to our district and students.
